Object Referral means that you effectively define yourself through external objects, i.e. people, situations, titles, possessions and/or your accomplishments.
This is an unhelpful way to define yourself because by their very nature objects change. As such, when these changes take place they affect how you see yourself and they therefore affect your self-esteem.
You will for instance feel good about yourself when things are going well, when people compliment and praise you, and when your goals are being realized. However, when all of a sudden people criticize you, when you face setbacks, and when you don’t get what you want, you start feeling insecure and your self-esteem suffers as a result.
